Movie Rating: Coraline.

It tells a story which holds the audiences’ attention. 

The storyline in the movie Coraline properly infuses a child’s wonder as well as a sense of dread as she keeps on going into the Other World. She sees a world to her ideal but realizes life is not what it seems, just a creation of the other mother. She comes to realize that the world is what she makes of it. The only issue may be that it is a bit slow progression wise with a stretched out ending.

Demonstrates camera work and editing which enhances the story. 

The editing style is edited in a way to provide a topsy-Turvey effect which is a great transition as you see the movie all about a world that is the opposite of the real world we were introduced to. Like when she chases the mouse to the Other World, the camera is tilted and is positioned in an odd way. It highlights the obscurity the movie is all about.

Contains dialogue, narration, and/or background music which enhances the story. 

The music in the movie are iconic pieces that give into the whimsy the movie is about. Like when she defends herself against the other mother you can feel the intensity of the scene with the pressuring music in the background.  

 

The dialogue shows what each character is like, such as Wybie, who is a nervous kid and has some stutters and a quick way of speaking. Or the demanding tone and words the Other Mother speaks after she reveals her true colors.

It has compelling and interesting actors. 

The actors in this movie have much diversity amount their tones. Like Teri Hatcher, who plays the Other Mother and Coraline’s mom, she captures the annoyed mother voice perfectly. She also captures the anger of an evil spirit when she plays the other mother. She intertwines the angry mother and monstrous evil at the same time.

Movie Analysis: Coraline       In the “Passage to them Other World” scene, you can see a variety of angles used. For example , the tilted angle when she chases the little mouse to the tiny door connecting to the Other World , it provides a n odd essence to the scene. You can see all the different angles of the mouse, upside down, sides, and right side up. In an odd way, it also foreshadows the backwards place he brings Coraline. As the scene continues you can a POV shot while she crawls through the tunnel in the small door. It gives an almost magical effect, and it gives you the feeling as if you are crawling through it yourself. Fantasy Genre Mood Borad!      In the fantasy genre a common element we see constantly is an autumn color scheme. We can see the color scheme in use by the pictures inserted in the mood board above. Some common color trends are forest greens, deep oranges, and grays/blacks. This sets a mystical feel in the genre. This is a classic in the fantasy field.       Another feature in the fantasy genre is magic and magical creatures. Pictures of dragons are shown, which are a storybook classic, they are a pinnacle in castle-set books and films. Usually, these creatures are seen as monsters and are slain by a knight in shining armor. Magic is also used in many films. Movie Opener Brainstorm and Research

 Movie Opening 1: RISE      This movie opening about a kid seemingly practicing for a soccer match and proceeds to stare down the seemingly opponent. Natural lighting is use throughout the film. Various close ups are used to show the importance of the objects and movements. One key close up seems to be of the main character and his opponent. This seems to be a classic "who will win?" scene.     The most influential part of this film that had on my group project was the lighting. I like the natural lighting coming from the sun outside. I plan on having most of my film outdoors for the bright and joyful light that the sun provides.
