Movie Analysis: Coraline

In the “Passage to them Other World” scene, you can see a variety of angles used. For example, the tilted angle when she chases the little mouse to the tiny door connecting to the Other World, it provides an odd essence to the scene. You can see all the different angles of the mouse, upside down, sides, and right side up. In an odd way, it also foreshadows the backwards place he brings Coraline. As the scene continues you can a POV shot while she crawls through the tunnel in the small door. It gives an almost magical effect, and it gives you the feeling as if you are crawling through it yourself. The shot is quickly followed to when she sees the Other Mother for the first time, there is a close on her face, but mainly on her button eyes. Here you see how similar she looks to Coraline’s normal mom in her world. This close up emphasizes on how different the Other Mother is from Coraline and from us. It immediately draws our attention to the difference and gives us feelings of discomfort and curiosity at the same time.

In the Scene “Jumping Mouse Circus” scene, some shots that are the most noticeable include a wide shot and a low angle shot. Right at the beginning of the scene, where we see Coraline first crawl into the seemingly small circus, there is a wide shot. This was most likely used for two reasons. First, to introduce the new setting this scene will take place in, and second, to show irony on how big it is on the inside of the tent rather than the small little blanket we see at first. This shot really helps introduce the scene and includes a point of humor while doing it. After the mice perform a little, you see a tower appear seemingly out of nowhere, it looms over the two kids, Coraline and Other Wybie, which shows us the low angle. This shot shows us the difference, in height, between the kids and the tower. The same shot also continues when Other Mr. B comes out of the tower and he also “towers” over the kids. It remains the same throughout the scene. It shows us the power difference between the three, in which Other Mr. B remains the strongest.

In the scene “The Other Mother”, you can see the cowboy shot with Coraline holding the cat in the first part. It shows from her waist up, holding the cat by her side. This makes a pathway for when she throws the cat at the Other Mother as a distraction. You can see the path in which she throws the poor cat. It ironically uses the shot as a representation of what the original meaning shows. Moving to where Coraline finds her parents in the snow globe is an over-the-shoulder shot. You can see the back of Coraline’s head, and the parents trapped in the Snow globe. You see how she was looking around for them and becomes emotional when she does.
